Hi everyone

Please take note of the information in previous posts. This is serious. The Council are being approached today but dont hold your breath.

This is a serious situation to all of our rabbit people in the North.

Please!!!!!!!!!!!! I cannot stress enough. Total stock control/movement should be adhered to stop this being wider spread.

Strict hygeine, and closing your sheds to visitors, you yourself be vigilent as to where you go in case of contamination.

Take care everyone and report any outbreaks you hear of

rabbitry is closed here at the moment pauline, cost of vaccinations is ridiculas and the vet is going to try and source some for me , its been all over the local radio station in regards to the drop of the virus , i am hoping it stays in the far north but i am not holding my breath, i have informed a few friends up that way not to come visit , how long should they stay away for before its safe ???? they dont have rabbits but they live in kerikeri so that is why we want to be careful

Wendy
That is a tricky one. We will have to wait and see if there are deaths and that they are reported.
Without knowing it persons can transport RCD. So it is us that have to vigilent and take all precautions.
Good luck and hope that you stay safe.

Just picked up my five vacs from the vet and will be dosing my breeding bunnies tonight. I'm near Kerikeri and my rabbits are out in pasture runs and I do have wild bunnies about so I'm not risking it. The vet was happy to give me the doses and let me inject them (I'm experienced with injecting humans) and charged me $98 for five doses and a phone consult. Pretty happy with that. And all my kits are less than seven weeks old so according to MAF, they'll be alright (I hope).

i,m sorry i don,t really want to be the one that brings the bad news , but the way i understand it , the virus is a wind borne one , which means it can be spread by anybody , or any thing , even a bird, cat, dog,by your car wheels driving over a road kill etc ,its here to stay no matter how hard we lobby against it , theres only one way to protect our bunnys , vaccinate , i,m sorry if i have to be the one to say this , but is now fact , if you cant afford to vaccinate all your bunnys you probably have to many, i,m one that admits that i had to many (for my budget)and had to cut back , i lost quite a few last year and am not willing to put the bunnys i have through what the others went through. it,s not very nice to go to bed and get up next morning and see what you have lost ,and also watch while they die a painfull death ,every rabbit that is on my property that is old enough (twelve weeks)has been vaccinated , about 30 odd , that includes my grandsons pets (they deserve to live just as much as the pure bred). just because you are not able or willing to give them a chance. if the costs are to high , get a few owners in your general area together , approach your vet to see if they will give you a discount for bulk, ie the phial comes for 10 , and from what i have been told, once the seal has been broken the rest does not last long ,even under refrigeration, hence the price they have to charge, so if they can get ten at a time the charges should be able to be reduced

i,m sory i meant to mention , but got caried away , the price here at my last lot was $25 , that will most certanly go up with the new gst charges . why some charge more than others i have no idea , perhaps like some other professionals they want to retire earlier.

thanks rex, yes i got all mine done last year and that was an expensive advent for me and my household at $30 per rabbit and that was with a discount for bringing in 10 rabbits, so when you take that all into account it was $300 i paid for the vial and then another $40 i could have been charged for a consultation fee our vet weavered the fee for me which was nice , some of the vets in my area are so money hungry that they will do the group vaccinations but if you want a certificate for each rabbit you have to pay an extra $10 for wach certificate, they state it is a book work fee , the problem we have here is that most of our vet clinics are all in the one vet group , they have all amalgamated ( forgive my spelling ) together and therefor they cover 90% of the town and all their prices are very simular if not the same, i have one that i deal with that isnt in this group but at the moment they are finding it hard to source enough vaccine to cover their clients , we have no young ones here at the moment that need their shots, our last ones got done a few weeks back so all of mine have atleast had one shot , some are due for thier yearly boosters in a couple of months

Hi

The vets should offer bulk discounts. Mine charges $100 for 10 vaccinations (usually $40 each) and then $20 consult.

Did you find out where Rose is Wendy as she is a new vet up north and may be able to offer the vaccinations cheaper? May even be able to come to your house

I am seeing her sunday at the meeting she is the RCNZ secretary

Hi Everyone
Just an update as of the weekend.
Have been talking to our Secretary and she advises that there have been no cases of RCD seen at the Vet Surgery that she works. Also she has not heard of any outbreaks.
Lets keep our fingers crossed that it has not been released because of weather conditions in the North which have been particularly bad.
Lets hope that we get our round of show over before there is an outbreak.
We will keep you uptodate on any news.

its good news to hear, i have been keeping the ears to the ground and i have been in contact with the petting zoo in kerikeri and they havent had any rabbit deaths yet, they are going to ring me as soon as they do and they have also closed their gates at the moment due to the weather but if they get deaths they are completely closing for the 110 days that is needed as they dont want to be the result of spreading it, the vet i deal with also hasnt had any rabbits present with sudden deaths so i am hoping the nasty weather we have been having has either haulted the spread of it or they havent released it , they dont want to release in the warmer weather because of the risk of creating young babies getting a higher immunity to it and them surviving and passing this higher immunity to the virus , fingers crossed still that we get another year of shows cleared and no outbreaks

I have missed this thread so a bit behind the eight ball... but have been told via grapevine that they are/have? released virus out coastal areas of Wellsford where the bird reserves etc are. This is apparently a common occurrence. I am currently trying to get info on this and finding out if its factual so will let you know if I hear anything.
