How can you cull an Angora Angela...lol just look at their faces, the heart melts. oh....I see, I was certain I did read it somewhere. Could that be changed maybe to the British Standard so that it is only a fault, not a DQ? you have mail Angela...:-) |

Hi there all ... my 'two cents' worth of comments here... With limited numbers of breeders of Angoras in New Zealand (like in most countries).. and with the Angora being such a high maintenance bunny... culling is a neccessity... (unfortunately)... we cannot keep all... and ONLY the best must be kept... if the breed is to move forward and not regress.... I say.. be 'strong' in your direction that you want to breed for, whether it is for show, fibre, whatever, and stick to your goals... For me... colour, and density of fibre are the most important, because I spin in rather prolific amounts...I certainly won't pass over an exceptional animal.... if a 'white' toenail comes forward in a coloured animal... Anyway... this is just my point of view... everybody looks at their situation in a different light....
Cheers
Kathryn

I am always careful that I dont sell my angoras to anyone with the culling mentality.& would hate it if any went to someone so hard hearted.....that is one of the reasons I breed so rarely..fortunately spinners or special pet people dont mind those sort of faults & I feel easy care coats are important.. White toenails are not always a genetic fault however & for showing we are striving for perfection (mans idea of perfection as we like playing God I guess!)and as here in NZ its a DQ rule we as judges have to abide by that rule |

I am with you on that one Lyn. I do understand the point of view about culling, but myself am unable to. The moment I put down a healthy animal just because of a fault I will stop breeding. Culling does speed goals up for sure, but I rather do it the longhaul then. I feel that I dont have the right to decide what lives and what doesnt and I am attached to all my babies from day 1, we name them and love them and thats the only way for us to keep them. jmo

I disagree about culling being a necessity. Our gene pool is soooooo small... and you want to shrink it even more!! Harsh culling practises will be the nail in the coffin for our rare, beloved breed. |

| Yes, thing is with the culling of rare breeds, you keep yourself to a bare minimum of selected animals and make yourself vulnerable to loss. Calici can kill even vaccinated stock, or you can have other deseases or disasters, I have seen it happen. I do believe that each animal is important for us to keep the lines going...even if they are not "perfect" they still carry precious bloodlines and could throw beautiful animals. I also believe in the importance of sharing our lines, we are too vulnerable to keep them in one rabbitry. Only if we work together we can make sure they are as safe as they can be in this country. my opinion only... |

Agree with kerstin, ang and lyn. I would for ever be asking myself, what if? that bunny could have potentially thrown gorgeous bunnies, or grown into its looks JMO
